Matthew: The Kingdom Of God

The Kingdom of God is one of the major themes in the gospel of Matthew. The word “kingdom of God” is used for 4 times and “kingdom of heaven” is used for 32 times. The word “kingdom” is used for 25 times in the gospel of Matthew. The tradition says that it was Matthew who wrote this gospel. We too believe that Matthew, one of the Apostles of Christ, is the author of this gospel. In fact, He has written this gospel account of Jesus Christ to the Jewish people in order to present Him as their expected and predicted Messiah. There are differences of opinion in interpreting the topic “the Kingdom of God”. Yet, it is very clear by looking at the Old Testament prophecies as well as the gospel accounts that God has promised about the literal Kingdom. Even the Jews were expecting for the same thing. In the given promises, the kingdom of God includes the spiritual aspect as well as the physical aspect. However, the blunder of the Jewish people was that they were looking for the political Messiah to deliver them from the bondage of the gentile domination. Therefore they had missed the spiritual aspect of God’s Kingdom.

Jesus came to preach about the Kingdom of God. He shared about the spiritual qualifications that are necessary in order to enter the God-promised Kingdom. The clear-cut distinction between physical and the spiritual aspect of God’s Kingdom was not clear to the Jews at the time of Christ. However, when we look back to the past history we understand that the spiritual aspect is fulfilled in the first coming of Jesus. But the physical aspect of the kingdom will be fulfilled when Christ comes for the second time to set up His kingdom on this earth. Now I would like to present before the reader some of the important characteristics of the Kingdom of God described in the gospel of Matthew.

THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE KINGDOM OF GOD

1. The Kingdom of God is the Theme of Gospel Preaching

The Kingdom of God is not only the theme of the gospel of Matthew but also the theme of the Gospel preaching. It may surprise us when we find out that the theme of John the Baptist preaching ministry was the kingdom of heaven. He said, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand (Mt 3:2)”. His preaching in the wilderness filled with the concept of God’s kingdom. He called people to repent and turn to God. The main reason for John the Baptist to preach about God’s kingdom was Jesus Christ, the King of Jews, who has to come to establish His kingdom on the earth. In response to this message, people came from different parts to repent and to be baptized by John.

This topic was not ended with John the Baptist. When Jesus came into public ministry He too preached about the kingdom of God as the theme of His Gospel preaching. His first message began with preaching, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand (Mt 4:17)”. His message was according to Old Testament prophecies. Moreover, Jesus didn’t neglect to emphasize in his preaching on the big problem of the humanity which is sin. In confronting sin, He called people seriously for repentance since the kingdom of God is at hand. He preached about the gospel of the kingdom wherever He went (Mt 4:23, 9:35).

Not only John the Baptist and Jesus Christ but also the early church disciples preached about God’s kingdom. Jesus sent His disciples two by two on the mission and He commanded them to proclaim the same message, “The kingdom of heaven is at hand (Mt 10:7)”. That’s what they preached continuously wherever they went. I think one of the missing pieces in our gospel presentation is the kingdom of God. Therefore as John the Baptist, Jesus and disciples preached, we too must preach about the kingdom of God in gospel sharing. However, in doing so let us not forget to emphasis on the aspect of repentance and turning to God.

2. The Kingdom of God Requires Spiritual Qualities

The kingdom of God was preached very strongly in the gospel of Matthew. Yet it was not offered without requiring spiritual qualities. If those required qualities are not met, then the entrance is not allowed. Jesus said very explicitly that the first and foremost quality necessary to enter the kingdom of God is to convert and become like a child (Mt 18:3). In other words, we should humble ourselves to enter the kingdom of God. In doing so we should turn from all our wickedness in order to turn to God. If this basic quality is not met, there is no place in the God offered kingdom. Moreover, Jesus made it very clear that “the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these children (Mt 19:14)”.

According to the words of Christ now we understand that one should be born again to enter God’s kingdom. On the other hand, Christ will not allow the mere followers to enter His kingdom. In fact, He will tell them on the Day of Judgment “I never knew you DEPART ME, YOU WHO PRACTICE LAWLESSNESS (Mt 7:23)” because “..they don’t do the will of the Father in Heaven (Mt 7:21)”. Therefore, we should be very careful in our lives that we may not become hypocrites where we will end up in going to hell rather than to heaven.

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus said “unless our righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees you shall not enter the kingdom of heaven (Mt 5:20). In other words, the standard is so high that our true righteousness should exceed the false righteousness of the religious people of those days. Or else we will not enter the kingdom of God. Jesus spoke about the qualifications for the kingdom of God in the beatitudes that “Blessed are the poor in spirit for there is the kingdom of heaven (Mt 5:3)” To be a part of the kingdom of heaven one should realize of his sinful condition. That is he must be poor in spirit. Speaking about the qualifications Jesus said that “Blessed are those who have been persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven (Mt 5:10).

A question was asked by the disciples “who then is greatest in the kingdom of heaven”? Jesus replied that “whoever then humbles as this child, he is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven (Mt 18:4)”. In other words, unless we humble ourselves in this spiritual kingdom of God, we will not be exalted by God in His coming physical kingdom in the future. The same thing was answered by Jesus when the mother of John and James requested Him to give prominent places to her sons in his kingdom that “whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave (Mt 20:27)”.

The kingdom of God is a vast subject. Therefore we need to study in depth to understand so that it may result in having a biblical perception in our lives.

The Second Coming of Christ

Introduction

1. The time of second coming is unknown

“But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone” (Mt 24:36)

"But of that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but the Father [alone.]” (Mk 13:32).

“…I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what hour I will come upon you” (Rev 3:3)

2. The Second coming of Christ is sudden and unexpected

“Therefore, be on the alert--for you do not know when the master of the house is coming, whether in the evening, at midnight, at cockcrowing, or in the morning-- lest he come suddenly and find you asleep” (Mk 13:36)

"For this reason you be ready too; for the Son of Man is coming at an hour when you do not think [He will.] (Mt 24:44)

“You too, be ready; for the Son of Man is coming at an hour that you do not expect" (Lk 12:40)

“Behold, I am coming like a thief” (Rev 16:15)

“For you yourselves know full well that the day of the Lord will come just like a thief in the night” (1 Thes 5:2)

3. The Second coming of Christ is imminent

I am coming quickly; hold fast what you have, in order that no one take your crown” (Rev 3:11)

“And behold, I am coming quickly. Blessed is he who heeds the words of the prophecy of this book” (Rev 22:7)

"Behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward [is] with Me, to render to every man according to what he has done” (Rev 22:12)

“He who testifies to these things says, "Yes, I am coming quickly." Amen. Come, Lord Jesus” (Rev 22:20)

Before the Second coming of Christ

I. Last Days Signs

1. The apostasy in the Christian circles

And Jesus answered and said to them, "See to it that no one misleads you” (Mt 24:4)

“And at that time many will fall away and will deliver up one another and hate one another” (Mt 24:10)

“But the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons, by means of the hypocrisy of liars seared in their own conscience as with a branding iron,[men] who forbid marriage [and advocate] abstaining from foods, which God has created to be gratefully shared in by those who believe and know the truth” (1 Tim 4:1-3)

2. The False doctrines and False Teachers

“For many will come in My name, saying, 'I am the Christ,' and will mislead many” (Mt 24:5)

“And many false prophets will arise, and will mislead many” (Mt 24:11)

"Then if anyone says to you, 'Behold, here is the Christ,' or 'There [He is,'] do not believe [him.] For false Christs and false prophets will arise and will show great signs and wonders, so as to mislead, if possible, even the elect” (Mt 24:23,24)

“But the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons by means of the hypocrisy of liars seared in their own conscience as with a branding iron,[men] who forbid marriage [and advocate] abstaining from foods, which God has created to be gratefully shared in by those who believe and know the truth” (1 Tim 4:1-3)

3. The worldliness in the Church

“But realize this, that in the last days difficult times will come .For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips, without self-control, brutal, haters of good, treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God; holding to a form of godliness, although they have denied its power; and avoid such men as these. For among them are those who enter into households and captivate weak women weighed down with sins, led on by various impulses” (2 Tim 3:1-6)

4. The Outpouring of the Holy Spirit

In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy. I will show wonders in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and billows of smoke. The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord” (Acts 2:17-21)

5. The Absorption/obsessed in daily activities

"For the coming of the Son of Man will be just like the days of Noah. For as in those days which were before the flood they were eating and drinking, they were marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and they did not understand until the flood came and took them all away; so shall the coming of the Son of Man be” (Mt 24:37-39)

6. The wars among the nations

“And you will be hearing of wars and rumors of wars; see that you are not frightened, for [those things] must take place, but [that] is not yet the end. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, But all these things are [merely] the beginning of birth pangs” (Mt 24:6-7a)

7. The Famine

“And in various places there will be famines..” (Mt 24:7)

8. The Earthquakes

“And in various places there will be famines and earthquakes” (Mt 24:7)

9. The Terrible persecution for the Christians

“Then they will deliver you to tribulation, and will kill you, and you will be hated by all nations on account of My name” (Mt 24:9)

10. The increase of sin

"And because lawlessness is increased…..” (Mt 24:12)

11. The Gospel preaching all over the world

“And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in the whole world for a witness to all the nations, and then the end shall come” (Mt 24:14)

12. The decrease of love

“And because lawlessness is increased, most people's love will grow cold” (Mt 24:12)

13. The increase of Knowledge (Dan 12:4)

“But as for you, Daniel, conceal these words and seal up the book until the end of time; many will go back and forth, and knowledge will increase" (Dan 12:4)

14. The increase of transportation (Dan 12:4).

“But as for you, Daniel, conceal these words and seal up the book until the end of time; many will go back and forth, and knowledge will increase" (Dan 12:4)

II. Tribulation

1. Tribulation time is for seven years before the second coming of Christ

“And he will make a firm covenant with the many for one week, but in the middle of the week he will put a stop to sacrifice and grain offering; and on the wing of abominations [will come] one who makes desolate, even until a complete destruction, one that is decreed, is poured out on the one who makes desolate" (Dan 9:27)

2. Tribulation is divided into two sections. One is general tribulation and second is greater tribulation

“For then there will be a great tribulation, such as has not occurred since the beginning of the world until now, nor ever shall” (Mt 24:21)

“But immediately after the tribulation of those days THE SUN WILL BE DARKENED, AND THE MOON WILL NOT GIVE ITS LIGHT, AND THE STARS WILL FALL from the sky, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken” (Mt 24:29)

3. Antichrist will be ruling the world during the tribulation period

“Let no one in any way deceive you, for [it will not come] unless the apostasy comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction, who opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, displaying himself as being God” (2 Thes 2:3-5)

4. Antichrist will make a covenant with Jews and will break it in the middle of the tribulation period (Dan 9:27).

5. There will be terrible persecution for the believers during the tribulation time (Rev 13:6-7).

“And he opened his mouth in blasphemies against God, to blaspheme His name and His tabernacle, [that is], those who dwell in heaven. And it was given to him to make war with the saints and to overcome them; and authority over every tribe and people and tongue and nation was given to him” (Rev 13:6-7)

At the Second coming of Christ

I. Church Rapture

1. The church rapture and the 2nd coming of Christ will take place at the same time

“For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of [the] archangel, and with the trumpet of God; and the dead in Christ shall rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and thus we shall always be with the Lord” (1 Thes 4:16-17)

“Now we request you, brethren, with regard to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and our gathering together to Him, that you may not be quickly shaken from your composure or be disturbed either by a spirit or a message or a letter as if from us, to the effect that the day of the Lord has come” (2 Thes 2:1-2)

Looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus” (Tit 2:13)

2. In rapture the believers will have the glorified bodies

Behold, I tell you a mystery; we shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet; for the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed. For this perishable must put on the imperishable, and this mortal must put on immortality” (1 Cor 15:51-53)

“Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and thus we shall always be with the Lord” (1 Thes 4:17)

“For our citizenship is in heaven, from which also we eagerly wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ who will transform the body of our humble state into conformity with the body of His glory, by the exertion of the power that He has even to subject all things to Himself” (Phil 3:20-21)

“Let not your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me. "In My Father's house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you to Myself; that where I am, [there] you may be also” (John 14:1-3)

After the 2nd coming of Christ

1. The destruction of the Antichrist and Final False prophet and their followers

“And the beast was seized, and with him the false prophet who performed the signs in his presence, by which he deceived those who had received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped his image; these two were thrown alive into the lake of fire which burns with brimstone. And the rest were killed with the sword which came from the mouth of Him who sat upon the horse, and all the birds were filled with their flesh” (Rev 19:20-21)

2. The Devil will be bound for 1,000 years

“And I saw an angel coming down from heaven, having the key of the abyss and a great chain in his hand. And he laid hold of the dragon, the serpent of old, who is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years, and threw him into the abyss, and shut [it] and sealed [it] over him, so that he should not deceive the nations any longer, until the thousand years were completed; after these things he must be released for a short time” (Rev 20:1-3)

3. Christ and the saints will rule the world for 1,000 years

And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given to them. And I [saw] the souls of those who had been beheaded because of the testimony of Jesus and because of the word of God, and those who had not worshiped the beast or his image, and had not received the mark upon their forehead and upon their hand; and they came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years. The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were completed. This is the first resurrection. Blessed and holy is the one who has a part in the first resurrection; over these the second death has no power, but they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with Him for a thousand years” (Rev 20:4-6)

4. The Devil will be released after 1,000 years of Christ reign and will deceive many

“And when the thousand years are completed, Satan will be released from his prison and will come out to deceive the nations which are in the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together for the war; the number of them is like the sand of the seashore” (Rev 20:7-8)

5. The Devil will be sent to lake of fire eternally

“And the devil who deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are also; and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever” (Rev 20:10)

6. God will judge the world on the final day of White throne judgment

“And I saw a great white throne and Him who sat upon it, from whose presence earth and heaven fled away, and no place was found for them. And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and books were opened; and another book was opened, which is [the book] of life; and the dead were judged from the things which were written in the books, according to their deeds. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead which were in them; and they were judged, every one [of them] according to their deeds. And death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. And if anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire” (Rev 20:11-15)

7. The old creation will be destroyed with fire and the New creation will be created

“For when they maintain this, it escapes their notice that by the word of God [the] heavens existed long ago and [the] earth was formed out of water and by water through which the world at that time was destroyed, being flooded with water. But the present heavens and earth by His word are being reserved for fire, kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men” (2 Pet 3:5-7)

“And I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth passed away, and there is no longer [any] sea. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, made ready as a bride adorned for her husband” (Rev 21:1-2)
